Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Southwestern College men's soccer squad hit the road on Saturday afternoon to face Oklahoma City University. The Moundbuilders offensive attack received yet another stellar performance from standout forward, Mamadou Diarra, who scored two goals to earnthe win over the previously undefeated Oklahoma City Stars.
The game started in favor of the Moundbuilders. Early shots by Mamadou Diarra and Hector Hernandez got the game going and helped the Builders to put pressure on Oklahoma City's goalkeeper. The Builders did not have to wait long until Mamadou Diarra scored the first goal in the 9th minute of the game and put the Moundbuilders up by one after a quick rebound off the hands of the OCU keeper.
In the 31st minute, the Moundbuilders were awarded a corner kick. Trevor Avila served the ball into the middle and found Hector Hernandez, who played the ball to Mamadou Diarrain front of the net, as he finished off the magnificent setup for the Builders' second tally. The salvo made it 2-0 SC entering the intermission.
As the game moved along, both teams had their chances. Six shots were fired by the Builders and eight attempts came from the Stars in the opening half.
The Stars of Oklahoma City attemptedto stage a comeback in the second stanza. They were able to get halfway there with a tally from Lucas de Freitasin the 66th minute, which was assisted by Harvey Paul. Luckily for the Builders, they could not push across that final goal that was necessary to knot up the score.
Interestingly, the Builders were outshot in the match, as the Stars sported sixteen shots to their name. Southwestern had just ninetries in the bout, which is just more than half of the Stars' total. Eight of Oklahoma City's shots were on goal, while the Moundbuilders had five of their nine attempts either threaten the net or reach the twine.
Diarra won the day for the Builders with his unbelievable offensive display, scoring a brace for the squad and showing stellar attacking prowess.
Josh Eibl made enough saves to earn the victory in this one, keeping out seven of the eight Stars' shots on frame. His leadership and efforts to keep the ball out of his net helped to keep the lead in the remainder of the second half.
Southwestern College (3-2-0) will now host the University of Saint Mary Spires on September 17th at 7:30 PM at Richard L. Jantz Stadium. That matchup will be their first Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) match to begin the 2022 conference season.
