WINFIELD, Kan. – On Sunday morning, the Southwestern College men's and women's tennis squads faced off on Sunday with the first-year Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) member school in the sport of tennis, Evangel University. A sunny day resulted in shining results for the Builder tennis teams as both SC teams won their bouts.
In women's doubles, Catherine Coe and Mariana Ochoa triumphed over the number one pair of Evangel by a final of 7-5. Jasmin Hauska and Grace Roberts followed suit with a second Builder win, as they defeated their opponents 6-2. The last doubles match was won by Ella Hartnett and Emily Feihle, as they dominated the matchup by a score of 6-1. Ultimately, the Moundbuilders earned the doubles point over the Valor.
The men's doubles matchups were much the same, as Ryan Kitchin and Pablo Rodriguez swept their opponents by a 6-0 final tally. Logan Engela and Benjamin Erdmann came next, and they finished their tilt with a 6-1 win, clinching the doubles' point for SC. To rounds thing out, Albert Modol and Federico Poi continued the winning streak, as they won their match 6-1.
On the women's side of singles, it was Coe who had to take defeat against the number one player of the Valor, as she fell by a score of 3-6, 7-5, 10-7. To brighten things up again, Hauska provided a great performance, triumphing by a final of 6-1, 6-2. Ochoa then also won her bout, as her opponent had to retire in the midst of competition. In addition, Roberts and Hartnett triumphed in their singles matchups, as both ladies swept their opponents by clean 6-0, 6-0 margins. Emily Feihle dominated in the beginning of her singles match up, but had to retire the game due to an ailment.
The men's Southwestern team impressed, as they won all of their singles matchups, securing them a dominant 7-0 victory. Poi swept his opponent 6-0, 6-0, Kitchin won his match 6-2, 6-2, Rodriguez triumphed by a final of 6-3, 6-2, Modol defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-0, Engela snagged a win by a score of 6-3, 6-2, and Ignacio Rubio finished the glorious afternoon for the Builders with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph.
The next action for SC tennis will be from the Builder men's team (8-2, 7-0 KCAC), who will be back on the court on Monday, Apr. 17, when they battle Oklahoma Wesleyan University at T.H. Vaughan Tennis Complex in Winfield at 3 p.m. The Moundbuilder women (7-1, 6-0 KCAC) will have to wait until Tuesday, Apr. 18 at Tabor to resume their KCAC schedule.
