WINFIELD, Kan. – On Tuesday, the Southwestern College men's and (RV) women's tennis teams hosted the Tabor College Bluejays at T.H. Vaughan Tennis Complex, as the previously scheduled away bout for the Builders became a home tilt due to a scheduling conflict. The Moundbuilder women managed to sweep the Bluejays in their matchup, while the men grabbed a 5-2 win to keep both squads undefeated in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) play.
In women's doubles, Catherine Coe and Mariana Ochoa began the Moundbuilder women's conquest of Tabor with a 6-0 victory. Jasmin Hauska and Grace Roberts did the exact same thing, crushing their opposition in straight sets, 6-0. The last doubles match was won by Ella Hartnett and Emily Feihle by forfeiture, as the Bluejays did not have six players in attendance.
The men's doubles matchups were more competitive, as Ryan Kitchin and Pablo Rodriguez snagged a 6-2 win to open play. Logan Engela and Benjamin Erdmann followed, and they dropped their matchup by a final of 6-4. To rounds thing out, Albert Modol and Federico Poi clinched the doubles point for Southwestern, winning handily by a score of 6-1.
Coe dominated singles match number one for the ladies, as she won 6-1, 6-2 over her No. 1 counterpart. Hauska continued the trend, obliterating her opponent by a score of 6-1, 6-0. Then, it was Ochoa who also lost just one game across the 13 total that she played. She won 6-0, 6-1 over the No. 3 player for Tabor. Roberts put forth a 6-2, 6-1 win in the fourth singles match, while Hartnett managed the only 6-0, 6-0 sweep of the day for the SC women. Feihle was an automatic winner by forfeit, clinching a 7-0 win over the Bluejays.
Men's singles were tight battles for the most part, as Southwestern began with a big 7-5, 6-4 win by Federico Poi. Then, Rodriguez managed a three-set win over his opposition in match number two. He took a 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 triumph. Kitchin won his bout 6-2, 6-4 to help the Builders jump out front with three straight singles wins. Modol came next, and fell 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to his counterpart, while Engela snagged a tight win in match number five by a score of 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (10-3). The match had already been clinched by the Builders, but Ignacio Rubio was the final competitor for SC on the evening, falling 6-3, 6-4 to end the day. Overall, it was a 5-2 win for Southwestern over Tabor.
The Builder men (10-2, 9-0 KCAC) and women (8-1, 7-0 KCAC) will play their final home battles of the season on Saturday, Apr. 22 at T.H. Vaughan Tennis Complex against Sterling College. The Senior Day festivities will be included with the day at the courts, as each of the programs' seniors will be honored before their final home matches.
