WINFIELD, Kan. — The Moundbuilders football team will kick off its NAIA Championship playoff journey at home against the University of Saint Francis Cougars this Saturday, Nov. 23, at 12:00 p.m. at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.
The Moundbuilders, who enter the postseason with a 10-1 record, are coming off a dominating season in which they outpaced their opponents in nearly every statistical category. Their potent offense ranks among the best in the nation, averaging 476.8 total yards per game. They are led by senior quarterback Braden Howell, who has thrown for 2,649 yards and 36 touchdowns, helping Southwestern to an impressive 42-point average per game.
Southwestern's offense has been dynamic, with a balanced attack that features both a strong rushing game and a prolific passing offense. The team has accumulated 2,152 rushing yards, led by standout running back JB Burnett, who has tallied 795 yards on the ground. Howell's aerial assault has been just as effective, with standout receivers like Matthew Holthusen (923 yards, 14 TDs) and Joe Smyth (439 yards, 5 TDs) leading the charge.
Defensively, the Moundbuilders have been equally impressive, with a suffocating defense that has limited opponents to just 226 yards per game. Key defensive contributors include linebacker Jacardon Hardemon, who leads the team with 13 tackles for loss, and safety Isaiah Yehudah, who has made 67 total tackles.
On the other side, the Cougars (8-3) bring a potent passing attack, led by quarterback Joshua Kulka, who has thrown for 2,864 yards and 36 touchdowns this season. Kulka's ability to stretch the field could present challenges for Southwestern's defense, but the Moundbuilders have excelled in pass defense this year, holding opponents to just 137.9 passing yards per game.
Saint Francis has also shown strength in the run game, with David Smith and Lenny Bennett combining for over 1,000 yards rushing, but they will need to keep pace with Southwestern's high-scoring offense. Despite the Cougars' offensive firepower, they will face a stiff test in the Builder's defense.
