WINFIELD, Kan. – Southwestern College men's soccer earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bethel College on the road Friday night, Oct. 4, with senior midfielder Connor Inlow scoring the match's lone goal to lift the Builders to 4-2 in KCAC play.
The Builders' defense held firm for 90 minutes, limiting Bethel's scoring opportunities throughout the match. Goalkeeper KJ Masso anchored the back line with several key saves to secure the win. The result adds another important three points to Southwestern's conference campaign as the team continues to climb the KCAC standings.
Southwestern now turns its attention to a home matchup against Avila University (Mo.) on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 7:30 p.m. at Richard L. Jantz Stadium. Avila enters the contest with a 1-4 conference record following a 3-2 loss on Oct. 4. The Eagles have scored just three goals in conference play, with tallies from Malcolm Goswell, Beck Snowden and Mortaza Panja. Goalkeeper Harrison Ennis has logged 360 minutes this season, making 40 saves for a .755 save percentage.
For Southwestern, Jack Bagley Etheridge leads the team in scoring with six conference goals, followed by Marcos Benavidez with four. In goal, Masso has played 873 minutes overall this season, recording 48 saves and a .750 save percentage. With a strong defensive unit and steady goalkeeping, the Builders will look to continue their momentum at home.
Last season, Southwestern fell 2-1 to Avila on the road despite a 47th-minute goal from then-freshman defender Alexis Soriano. The Eagles responded 20 seconds later with a goal from Thaddeus Chapman, and Malachi Saffery netted the game-winner in the 57th minute. Masso played the full 90 minutes for the Builders, while Ennis went the distance for Avila.
Southwestern aims to avenge last year's loss and strengthen its conference record when the two teams meet Tuesday night in Winfield.
