TOPEKA, Kan. — Southwestern logged a full slate of performances on the track and in the field at the Washburn Alumni Invitational, with the Moundbuilders turning in efforts across sprints, distance races, and the throws on the men's side and adding mid-distance and throwing marks in women's competition.
In the women's events, senior Lauryn Peterson placed 10th in the 800 meters in 3:06.77. In the throws, sophomore Malia Pearson took 27th in the shot put with a best of 9.93 meters (32 feet, 7 inches) and finished 34th in the weight throw at 10.94 meters (35-10.75). Senior Vanessa Mendoza was 29th in the weight throw with a mark of 11.25 meters (36-11).
Southwestern's men were active throughout the meet, led on the track by a group of sprinters in the 60-meter preliminaries. Senior Christopher Collier-Surly ran 7.11 to place 53rd, freshman Ben Patowski was 60th in 7.17, sophomore Dominique Orosco finished 70th in 7.23, senior Dashawn Haskin placed 76th in 7.29, and sophomore Manuel Reyes was 96th in 7.55.
Haskin also doubled back in the 200 meters, placing 56th in 23.18, while Reyes finished 75th in 24.49. In the middle distances, senior Jamell Sanchez placed 15th in the 800 meters in 2:31.01 and later ran 5:27.98 for 40th in the mile. Sophomore Derek Ponce-Gonzales added a 20th-place finish in the 5,000 meters in 18:30.19.
In the field, senior Lyrix Howard cleared 1.74 meters (5-8.5) to finish 11th in the high jump. Freshman JJ Crawford placed 20th in the long jump at 6.54 meters (21-5.5) and took 11th in the triple jump with a best of 13.32 meters (43-8.5). Sophomore Emerson Williams finished 15th in the shot put at 13.17 meters (43-2.5) and was 21st in the weight throw with a mark of 11.76 meters (38-7).
Southwestern returns to action Jan. 10 when both the men's and women's teams compete at Friends University.
