Game Preview: Southwestern Softball VS Avila

3/24/2025 8:15:00 PM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Southwestern (6-12) will look to get back in the win column Tuesday afternoon when it travels to take on Avila (2-17) in a non-conference softball doubleheader.

The Moundbuilders enter the matchup mired in a four-game losing streak but have shown flashes of offensive firepower, led by junior catcher Tiara Henry, who is batting .400 with 12 RBIs and four extra-base hits. Fellow junior Lainey Hardman adds punch to the lineup with a .349 average and a team-best .535 slugging percentage.

Southwestern is hitting .287 as a team and has stolen 13 bases in 17 games. Defensively, they've committed 27 errors for a .937 fielding percentage.

In the circle, Faith Campbell has anchored the staff with 43.1 innings pitched, collecting 22 strikeouts and one win. Southwestern's pitching has been tested throughout the season, holding a 7.76 team ERA.

Avila has struggled on both sides of the ball, losing eight straight and allowing opponents to hit .383. The Eagles' pitching staff carries a 7.76 ERA, while the team has managed just two home runs all season and is hitting .287.

Southwestern will aim to take advantage of Avila's defensive woes — the Eagles have committed 31 errors this year and surrendered 13 stolen bases — while cleaning up their own miscues in the field and on the mound.

The doubleheader marks a critical opportunity for the Builders to reset before returning to conference play, as both teams seek momentum heading into the back half of the season.

First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST.
