WINFIELD, KS — The Southwestern Moundbuilders will look to get back in the win column April 2, when they host a struggling York University (Neb.) team for a doubleheader in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Southwestern (6-16, 0-12) has dropped eight straight games but sees an opportunity to bounce back against a York squad (7-23, 2-10) that has had its own share of growing pains this season. The Moundbuilders are winless in conference play, but they've shown flashes of offensive potential, particularly from junior catcher Tiara Henry, who leads the team with a .373 batting average and 14 RBIs.
Junior Reagan Wright (.328) and junior Lainey Hardman (.309) also anchor the top of the order, while Southwestern will hope to get continued production from Fayth Howard (.289) and Emily Garza (.273). Despite offensive spurts, the Moundbuilders have struggled to find consistency on the mound, with a team ERA of 8.30.
Sophomore right-hander Faith Campbell is expected to get the ball in Game 1. She leads the team in innings pitched (56.1) and strikeouts (26), while freshman Morgan Shaw has provided support with a 6.05 ERA over 41.2 innings.
York, meanwhile, enters the matchup with one of the highest team ERAs in the conference at 5.86 and has allowed opponents to hit .335 on the season. Offensively, Nevaeh Reed is the catalyst, leading the Panthers with a .439 average and 15 RBIs. Paige Chapman (.313) and Kennedie Anderson (.273) round out York's top hitters.
Southwestern will need to take advantage of York's fielding struggles—York has committed 70 errors through 30 games—and capitalize on every baserunning opportunity. The Moundbuilders have been aggressive on the basepaths, successfully swiping 16 bags in 18 tries.
Wednesday's doubleheader represents a key moment for both programs as they look to shift momentum before the home stretch of the season. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
