WINFIELD, Kan. — Entering his second year at Southwestern and first at the helm of the men's and women's cross country programs, Coach Shane Brookshire looks to guide the Moundbuilders toward success in a fiercely competitive KCAC lineup.
On the women's side, the Moundbuilders return senior Lauryn Peterson of Junction City, Kansas. Peterson looks to set new personal records in the 5,000-meter and 6,000-meter distances this fall after posting best times of 25:41.1 in the 5K and 31:32.1 in the 6K during the Moundbuilders' 2024 campaign.
On the men's side, senior Jamell Sanchez and sophomore Derek Ponce will return to the starting line for the Moundbuilders. Consistent improvement will be a main priority this fall as the duo aims to climb the KCAC leaderboard after finishing 79th and 89th overall at the 2024 championship meet.
To kick off the 2025 campaign, the Moundbuilders will make the trip to Wichita for the J.K. Gold Classic, hosted by Wichita State University. The men's race is slated for an 8 a.m. start, with the women's race to follow. The two squads will then compete at the NCCC Invitational and Billy Mays Classic before rounding out the season at the KCAC Championships, hosted by the University of St. Mary (Kan.).
