WINFIELD, Kan.— Southwestern will look to rebound from its first loss of the season when it travels to Ottawa for a nonconference matchup Saturday at AdventHealth Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The No. 20 Moundbuilders (2-1) dropped a 35-25 decision to Evangel last week, falling from No. 14 in the NAIA coaches' poll. Ottawa (2-1) has won two straight, including a 51-20 victory at Sterling.
Southwestern has been prolific on offense through three games, averaging 511.3 yards per contest with a balanced mix of 317.3 passing and 194.0 rushing. Quarterback Jamie Odom has passed for 873 yards and eight touchdowns while also rushing for three scores. Receiver Matthew Holthusen has emerged as his top target with 362 yards and four touchdowns.
The Braves counter with quarterback Luke Edwards, who has thrown for 780 yards and four scores while completing 61% of his attempts. His favorite target, De'Anthony Curtis, has 350 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Running back Anthony Powell leads the ground game with 151 yards.
Defensively, Ottawa has made its mark with a pass rush that has totaled 15 sacks in three games. Southwestern's offense line will be tested after allowing pressure in its lone loss. The Braves are also efficient in the kicking game, converting 6 of 9 field-goal tries with a long of 45 yards.
Southwestern's defense has forced five interceptions and held opponents to 302.3 yards per game. The Builders have also controlled time of possession, averaging nearly 35 minutes per contest.
The series has tilted toward Southwestern recently, with the Builders winning the last five meetings, including a 41-0 shutout in Ottawa a year ago. Ottawa still holds the edge in the all-time series dating back two decades.
