HILLSBORO, Kan. — Southwestern will try to build on its explosive season-opening win when the Moundbuilders travel to Tabor College for a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup Saturday night at Joel H. Wiens Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
Southwestern (1-0, 0-0 KCAC) opened its season in dominant fashion, rolling past Bethel 61-7. The Moundbuilders piled up 704 yards of total offense, including a staggering 472 on the ground. Junior quarterback Jamie Odom accounted for three rushing touchdowns and 65 yards on 10 carries, while senior wideout Matthew Holthusen led the receiving corps with six catches for 121 yards and a score.
The Moundbuilders' defense was equally stout, holding Bethel to just 220 total yards and forcing one interception. Southwestern allowed only 113 yards on the ground and 107 through the air, limiting the Threshers to a single touchdown.
Tabor (1-0, 1-0 KCAC) is also coming off a convincing start after defeating Sterling 34-9 on the road. The Bluejays were led by quarterback Ahmad Bailey, who completed 15 of 19 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding 38 yards on the ground. Wide receiver A.J. King was Bailey's top target, catching six passes for 96 yards and three scores. On defense, linebacker Cam Pair paced the unit with eight total tackles, and the Bluejays held Sterling to just 49 rushing yards.
Saturday's contest sets up as an early-season showdown between two teams looking to stay unbeaten in conference play. Southwestern brings one of the NAIA's most potent rushing attacks into Hillsboro, averaging 12.1 yards per carry in its opener, while Tabor counters with a balanced offense and a defense that limited Sterling to 262 total yards.
The Moundbuilders will aim to extend their winning streak and build momentum as the KCAC schedule heats up, while the Bluejays look to defend their home field and keep pace near the top of the standings.
