WINFIELD, Kan. — The Southwestern College men's and women's golf teams showcased their depth and potential at the Southwestern Fall Invite on Monday at Quail Ridge Golf Course, with the men's program capturing the team title and sophomore Cameron Surles claiming the individual championship for the second straight year in Winfield. The event, originally scheduled for 54 holes, was shortened to 36 due to inclement weather expected Tuesday.
Southwestern entered three men's teams in the field, and its "A" squad left little doubt in the outcome. The Builders posted rounds of 288 and 294 for a 582 total, securing first place. Surles, a sophomore from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, led the way with a 70-72—142, his 2nd collegiate win. Sophomore Jordan Clancy finished runner-up with a 73-71—144, while Christian Campbell (72-77—149), Britt Blackshear (73-80—153) and Nico Nueteboom (80-74—154) rounded out the scoring.
Southwestern's "B" team totaled a 603, led by Teagan Johnson's steady 74-74—148. Mitchel Lehman and Nicolas Kern each posted 150, followed by Sydney Schrant (155) and Sebastian Read (165). The "C" team finished with a 654 total, paced by Drew Demeyer's 157. Other contributors included Garrett Woolsoncroft (164), Bransen Weatherly (170), Ian Rue (172) and Jaxon Lustig (179). Additional individual competitors included Zeke Williams (165), Dillon Gruel (176), and Seth Onofrio (171).
On the women's side, Southwestern competed with three individual entries. Senior Lauren Kelly of Amarillo, Texas, led the charge with rounds of 78 and 80 for a 158, securing second place overall in the tournament. Jodi Keener carded an 84-93—177, while Lillian Goodwin posted 127-120—247 to round out the Builders' efforts.
With Surles capturing the individual title, the men's team claiming the top spot, and two runner-up performances from both the men's and women's teams, Southwestern made an early-season statement. The performances underscore the program's youth and potential as Southwestern looks ahead to the remainder of the fall schedule. Southwestern will look to continue its momentum on October 6th and 7th at the Evangel University Fall Invite in Springfield, Mo. where both the men's and women's teams will be in action.
