DODGE CITY, Kan. — The Southwestern College men's and women's golf teams opened play Monday in the KCAC Match Play Tournament at Mariah Hills Golf Course, battling strong winds and fast greens in their final event of the fall season.
Playing in gusts reaching up to 40, the Moundbuilders faced tough conditions in Round 1, which served as stroke play to determine seeding for the match play portion of the tournament.
On the men's side, Southwestern posted a solid team showing led by Jordan Clancy's round of 78. Christian Campbell followed with an 81, while Mitchell Lehman (82), Cameron Surles (83) and Nicolas Kern (94) rounded out the lineup. The performance earned the Builders the No. 4 seed, placing them in the Gold Bracket for match play.
In their Round 2 matchup against Sterling College, play was suspended due to darkness with several matches still undecided. When play stopped, Sebastian Read was 1 down after nine holes, Lehman trailed by two through 10, Campbell was tied through 10, Clancy held a 1-up lead after 11, and Surles was 1 down through 11.
On the women's side, three Builders competed individually. Lauren Kelly carded an 88 to pace the team, while Jodi Keener shot 108 and Lillian Goodwin finished with 110. In Round 2 match play, the trio fared well before play was halted — Kelly was 4 up through 11 holes, Keener led by one after 11, and Goodwin was 6 up through nine.
Both teams will resume play Tuesday morning to complete their second-round matches before wrapping up the fall campaign with a final 18-hole match play round.
