WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern will look to build upon its 80-14 home win over Bethany when the Moundbuilders travel to Kansas City to take on the Avila University Eagles in a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference cross-divisional matchup. Kickoff is set for noon at the Zarda Family Multisport Complex.
Southwestern (4-1) enters the game with serious offensive momentum, averaging an NAIA-best 573.8 yards of total offense per game. Quarterback Jamie Odom continues to flourish under fourth-year offensive coordinator Ryan Nelson. Odom received NAIA Offensive Player of the Week honors on Monday evening after posting 429 total yards and 7 touchdowns in just three quarters of play against Bethany. Receiver Matthew Holthusen continues to dominate for the Builders, totaling 28 receptions for 744 yards and eight touchdowns. Avila (0-5) enters the clash on a tough losing streak, having fallen to Sterling College 29-17 in week five, its closest contest in the 2025 campaign. Quarterbacks Duce Taylor and Francisco Beltran look to lead the Eagles toward their first win of the season, with running back Quentin Curtis aiming to continue his recent success as the ground game leader.
Defensively, Avila has forced four fumbles this year. The Eagles also have found success on special teams as they rank 3rd in the KCAC-Kessinger division in average yards per punt with 37.1.
Southwestern's defense has thrived across the first five weeks of the 2025 season, allowing only 280 yards of offense per game and 17.8 points per game. Corbin Williams and Isaiah Yehudah lead the way for the Builders defense with 28 and 24 total tackles, respectively.
The matchup has favored Southwestern in the last seven seasons, as the Moundbuilders hold a record of 5-2 over the Eagles since 2018, with a dominant 40-21 victory in 2024.
