WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern dropped both ends of a KCAC doubleheader to Ottawa on Tuesday, falling 14-1 in Game 1 and 8-3 in Game 2.

Ottawa used a big third inning in the opener and a late surge in the nightcap to complete the sweep at home.

In Game 1, Southwestern struck first with a run in the opening inning, but Ottawa answered quickly and broke the game open with an eight-run third inning. The Braves added two more runs in the fourth and held Southwestern to just four hits in the 14-1 final.

Mackenzie Reinert led Southwestern at the plate in the opener, going 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk, while Tiara Henry also added a hit.

Game 2 was more competitive early, as Southwestern kept pace through the middle innings. The Moundbuilders broke through in the fourth inning to cut into the deficit and added two runs in the seventh to extend the game.

Taylor Mesna paced Southwestern offensively in the nightcap, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Tiara Henry and Reinert each contributed hits.

In the circle, Cesara Roque delivered a solid start in Game 2, allowing just one run over six innings before Ottawa pulled away late.

Ottawa sealed the sweep with a five-run seventh inning in the finale, finishing with 15 hits in the game.

Southwestern will look to bounce back on Saturday, April 4, traveling to Bethany for another KCAC matchup in Lindsborg, Kansas.
