WICHITA, Kan. — Southwestern College turned in a series of solid performances across both the men's and women's track and field teams at the Friends University Spring Invitational, held April 2-3.
Leading the way for the Moundbuilders were a pair of personal-record efforts from Emerson Williams and Dominique Orosco. Williams recorded new personal bests in both the shot put and hammer throw, while Orosco set a new mark in the 200 meters.
On the men's side, Orosco clocked a time of 22.91 seconds in the 200 meters to highlight the sprint group. Teammate Ben Patkowski added an 11.13 finish in the 100-meter preliminaries, while Logan Churchill posted a time of 51.98 in the 400 meters.
Williams delivered a strong showing in the field events, reaching 13.97 meters in the shot put and 37.83 meters in the hammer throw, both personal-best marks. Anthony Mendoza followed with throws of 11.26 meters in the shot put and 34.99 meters in the hammer, while JJ Crawford added a 10.26-meter effort in the shot put and a 6.15-meter mark in the long jump.
In distance events, Derek Ponce-Gonzales led Southwestern in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:57.76, followed by Jack Titgemeyer at 13:25.20. Jamell Sanchez posted a 5:07.08 finish in the 1,500 meters.
For the women, Lauryn Peterson paced the distance group with a time of 6:24.77 in the 1,500 meters. Abigail Eckert recorded a mark of 3.68 meters in the long jump.
In the throwing events, Malia Pearson led the way with a 9.76-meter effort in the shot put and a 32.58-meter throw in the hammer. Vanessa Mendoza also competed in the hammer but did not record a mark.
Southwestern will look to build on the momentum and personal-best performances as the Builders travel to Hillsboro for the Tabor College Invitational on Saturday morning.
