HILLSBORO, Kan. — Southwestern's men's and women's track and field teams will return to competition Saturday as they travel to Hillsboro for the Tabor College Invitational at Joel H. Wiens Stadium.
The Moundbuilders enter the meet coming off several strong performances early in the outdoor season, highlighted by depth across sprints, distance, and field events.
On the men's side, Dominique Orosco leads the sprint group after posting a 22.91 time in the 200 meters at the Friends University Spring Invitational. Ben Patkowski has added consistency in the 100 meters with times as fast as 11.02 this season, while Logan Churchill recorded a 51.98 in the 400 meters in the team's most recent outing.
Southwestern's distance group is paced by Jamell Sanchez, who turned in a 5:07.08 in the 1,500 meters, and Derek Ponce-Gonzales, who leads the steeplechase with an 11:57.76 mark. Jack Titgemeyer has also contributed in both the 800 and steeplechase events.
In the field events, Emerson Williams headlines the throwing group with a 13.97-meter mark in the shot put and a 37.83-meter throw in the hammer. Anthony Mendoza has added depth in both events, while JJ Crawford and Luke Peffer have led the horizontal jumps, including Peffer's 6.78-meter long jump.
For the women, Lauryn Peterson leads the distance events with times of 3:04.26 in the 800 meters and 6:24.77 in the 1,500 meters. Abigail Eckert has been a key contributor in the sprints and jumps, recording a 13.41 in the 100 meters and a top long jump of 4.48 meters this season.
The throwing group is anchored by Malia Pearson and Vanessa Mendoza. Pearson owns a season-best of 10.71 meters in the shot put and 33.78 meters in the discus, while Mendoza has posted a top hammer throw of 37.84 meters to lead the team.
Southwestern will look to continue building momentum as the outdoor season progresses when competition begins Saturday in Hillsboro.
