Holcombe Nets Brace in Southwestern Women's Soccer's 4-0 Shutout of McPherson

Box Score

WINFIELD, Kan. – On Wednesday night in Winfield, the Southwestern College women's soccer squad played host to the McPherson College Bulldogs at Richard L. Jantz Stadium, looking to remain unbeaten on their Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference slate. The team had no problem achieving that goal in this one, blanking the Bulldogs by a final score of 4-0 with a strong effort all around.

After a quiet period of play to begin the bout, the Builders would strike first with a well-placed shot from Hailey Rouse to beat the McPherson goalkeeper. Keiana Jones provided the setup for Rouse's goal in the 11th minute of play. Soon after, the Builders were able to clean up a shot from Rouse which was saved by the Bulldogs keeper. Luckily, the ball rebounded straight to Jones, who knocked it into a wide open net to make it 2-0 SC in the 17th minute. After approximately 20 mins of back-and-forth play, Southwestern would again put a tally on the scoreboard, as Taylor Holcombe was set up by Bryanna Kuhn for the third goal of the first half for SC. The goal occurred in the 36th minute and would end up being the final goal of the period.

Leading 3-0 at the start of the second stanza, Southwestern merely held their advantage for a majority of the, while not allowing many genuine opportunities arise for McPherson. After about 35 minutes of the half had melted away, the Moundbuilders gave their fans something else to be excited about, as Holcombe struck for her second goal of the match on a do-it-yourself play where she evaded a diving keeper at the edge of the box and regained control quick enough to knock the ball into the twine for Southwestern's fourth goal. That is how things would conclude, as the Builders continued their unbeaten streak with a 4-0 win over the visiting Bulldogs.

The Builders dominated the pace of play for the vast majority of the tilt, leading 20-6 in the shots attempted category. They held a 10-5 lead in the shots on goal department, as well, and converted on nearly half of those 10 tries between the pipes.

Holcombe was taking a shot on anything within reason on her standout night, as she attempted eight shots in the match. Four of those tries threatened the keeper, while two of them resulted in goals. Rouse and Lillian Grisso attempted three shots each, as they each had two shots on frame. Rouse was the only one of the two to net a goal, however. Jones was able to tally a goal on two shots attempts, while Julian Cowley took two shots that narrowly missed being on net.

Mallorie Lund has earned the 12th clean sheet in her career with the shutout of the Bulldogs, making five saves on the five shots that she faced in net. Lund continues to maintain her impressive form as the squad continues to move toward the conclusion of the 2022 campaign.

The Moundbuilders (7-3-3, 5-0-2 KCAC) continued their impressive unbeaten stretch with the triumph on Wednesday, but their next test will be their toughest yet, with a meeting in Bartlesville, Okla. on Saturday, October 15 at 5:30 p.m. against No. 6-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan University. It will be a battle of undefeated squads in KCAC action.
