First Half Offense Carries Builder Women's Soccer to 2-1 Win over Ottawa

Box Score

WINFIELD, Kan. – On a crisp night in Winfield, Kan., the Southwestern College women's soccer team played host to the Ottawa University Braves for a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) matchup. After suffering their first loss of their KCAC slate on Saturday, SC was looking to jump back into their winning ways in their bout with the Braves. They were able to make that happen, riding two first-half tallies to a 2-1 win over Ottawa on Wednesday.

It was a very evenly played fixture, as the teams ended up taking the same number of shots in the tilt. The 14 attempts by each side were not all of equal importance, however. In the opening half, SC had a 7-5 shot advantage, with two of those reaching the twine. Keiana Jones scored the opening goal of the match for the Builders in the 14th minute, driving a masterful left-footed rope into the top-left corner of the frame. She was set up beautifully by Bryanna Kuhn for the strike, which put Southwestern up 1-0. Then, Kenzie Saul came off the SC bench and promptly delivered another goal for the Moundbuilders. Kuhn again set up the goal scorer perfectly to make it 2-0 in the 34th minute of play.

Through the majority of the second half, scoring chances were few and far between, but in the 87th minute Ottawa did pick up a goal to cut the SC lead in half. The Braves had nine shots in the latter stanza, while the Builders only shot the ball seven times, but over the course of the match there was an 8-5 shot on goal advantage for the Moundbuilders.

Hailey Rouse took the most shots of any Builder, attacking the net three times, with two of those ending up on frame. Jones followed that with two shots, both of which were in goal, along with her goal-scoring effort in the 14th minute. Natalia Bak and Kuhn each took two shots, but only Kuhn had one shot end up on net. Saul's one shot that ended up in net was the other tally for the Builders, as their offense did just enough to earn a triumph.

It was another victory for Mallorie Lund, as she was just minutes away from another clean sheet, but will have to settle for a simple win under her belt instead. She was able to get back on the right track after Saturday's difficult match.

The Builders (8-4-3, 6-1-2 KCAC) are now down to their final three regular season tilts of the 2022 campaign, as the KCAC Tournament is just around the corner. The squad will look to improve its standing with victories at Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday, October 22 at 11 a.m., versus Sterling at 6 p.m. on October 26, and at Tabor on October 29 at 5:30 p.m.
