SC Women's Soccer Ties Kansas Wesleyan in Evenly-Matched Battle, 1-1

Box Score

SALINA, Kan. – The Southwestern College women's soccer squad went on the road on Saturday morning and battled the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes in Salina, Kan. It was a bout in which each team ended up with the exact same number of shots and shots on target, as each side had ample opportunities to score, but could only cash in on one occasion apiece. Each goal scored in the battle was on a penalty kick, as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Moundbuilders would bring pressure early, as they were able to draw a penalty in the 8th minute of play. Natalia Bak converted on her opportunity in the early stages of the match to make it 1-0 for the SC side. For the remainder of the half, Southwestern handled the majority of the chances to score, though they could not convert on any of their additional seven shots in the frame. Only two of their shots needed to be saved by the KWU keeper. The Coyotes could not seem to string much together in the first half, as they shot the ball just three times, but two of them were saved by Mallorie Lund.

With a 1-0 lead entering the second stanza, the Builders were attacked heavily by Kansas Wesleyan. The home squad had seven shots in the latter half, forcing two Builder saves. Unfortunately, one of their three shots on frame found the back of the net, and it was in the latest possible moment. In the match's 90th minute, KWU scored the equalizer after a penalty was committed by the Moundbuilders with just a few ticks remaining on the clock to earn the hosts a draw.

Taylor Holcombe played a large role for SC in this battle, as she shot the ball four times and was on net with three of those attempts. Avery Norman and Bak were the only other Builders to have a shot on goal, as Bak's PK netted Southwestern's lone tally.

Lund was nearly perfect, yet again, but surrendered the game-tying salvo in the 90th minute to put another draw on her record for the season.

Southwestern (8-4-4, 6-1-3 KCAC) showed grit in this game, playing strong defensive soccer throughout the match, and likely feel they should have come out on top. Unfortunately, that is not the way the cookie crumbled on this day, but it is still a positive result for the Builders. Next on the docket for SC is a Senior Night battle against Sterling College at Richard L. Jantz Stadium at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26.
