Box Score WINFIELD, Kan. – The Southwestern College women's soccer team played their final regular-season Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) home game of the 2022 season, as they hosted Wednesday night's Senior Night soccer game against the visiting Warriors of Sterling College. A one-sided game, in which 58 shots were counted for the Builders, ended in a 5-0 win over Sterling.
A scoreless first half of the game was a surprise for most people as Southwestern put 30 shots on the stats sheet in the opening frame. However, the Builders continued to show their dominance over the visiting Warriors in the second half of play as they came out of the intermission with an early goal in the 46th minute by senior Samantha Calvache. A great cross by Ana Llanos was picked up inside the box by Calvache who was able to nudge the ball over the goal line to score the first goal of the game.
It seemed as if the goal-scoring bubble had burst at that point, as in the 61st minute of play, Bryanna Kuhn was able to score on a cross by Llanos to improve the SC lead to 2-0. Just minutes later in the 64th minute, Taylor Holcombe scored via an assist by Natalia Bak. Bak crossed the ball from the right side into the box where Holcombe was able to finish to improve Southwestern's lead to 3-0.
The Builders did not stop there, as Julian Cowley scored in the 76th minute after a corner kick by Kenzie Saul to put the Builders up 4-0. Finally, Southwestern's fifth and final tally came in the 84th minute, when senior Hailey Rouse scored a beautiful goal on the second assist of the night by Bak. Rouse received the ball, dribbled through two defenders, and struck the ball into the top right corner of the frame to make the score a 5-0 final.
Southwestern was able to put 58 shots on the box score, as 29 of them were on goal. Rouse led the team in shots with 13, followed by Kuhn and Lillian Grisso who both had 11 shots.
Goalkeeper Ashley Soderlund had a peaceful night, as no shot came onto her goal compared to Sterling's goalkeeper Shaylee Gibbs who had impressive 23 saves. Soderlund earned the clean-sheet victory in her final home match as a collegiate goalkeeper.
Calvache, Rouse and Soderlund were all recognized for their contributions to SC women's soccer at halftime of the match, as they played their final home regular-season fixture of their collegiate careers. Additionally, Paige Roberts and Saul were fifth-year seniors that were recognized.
The Builders (9-4-4, 7-1-3 KCAC) are now preparing to play their final regular season game this Saturday when they face Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kan., as they hope to catch another win to finish the season on a high before going into the KCAC tournament. Kick-off is set for 5:30 p.m. on October 29 in Hillsboro.
