Rouse Breaks Records as SC Women's Soccer Wins KCAC Opener over Saint Mary, 4-1

Box Score

WINFIELD, Kan - The Southwestern College women's soccer team battled their first opponent from within the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) on Saturday evening at Richard L. Jantz Stadium. The opposition, the University of Saint Mary, arrived with hope for a win and left Winfield with zero points and their first conference loss. The bout ended in a 4-1 result in favor of the Moundbuilders.

It was a dominant night for the Builders, as the Builder women launched double-digit shots at USM's goalkeeper. The Builders outshot the Spires 18-3, as 11 of their shots were on frame, compared to only 3 by the Spires.

In addition, Hailey Rouse broke the record for most goals and points in program history. She scored 31goals for the Builders and earned 67 points in her four years at Southwestern College.

The game started off slowly, as both teams needed time to settle into the game. The Builders had shots on goal by Keiana Jones and Paige Roberts early, but they couldn't find theprecision to put the ball in the net.

It was the 19th minute when the Builders received a freekick after a foul by the Spires. Lillian Grisso took the ball, placed it on the twenty-yard line, took a few steps back, and ran up to boot the ball over USM's goalkeeper into the net to score the first goal of the tilt for the Builders.

Besides two shots from Bryanna Kuhn in 27th and 42nd minute, nothing else happened in the first half of the game.

The second half started in favor of Saint Mary as the Builders made a mistake that led to a goal by Katy St. Martin to even the score at 1-1.

Not impressed by that, SC focused on their strengths and tried to find a way back into the game. It was Hailey Rouse who used an assist by Teagan Smith in the 71st minute to score the second goal for the Builders to push the lead back to 2-1. Rouse's goal earned her the record for most goals and points in program history.

Followed by the new storming energy, the Builders were able to improve their lead to 3-1 after Natalia Bak scored a penalty kick in the 80th minute.

Shortly after in the 82nd minute, Bryanna Kuhn scored the fourth and final goal for the Builders to put the score in its final form at 4-1.

The Builders (3-3-1, 1-0-0 KCAC) will now travel out to York, Neb.for a battle with York University on September 20th, as they search for their second conference triumph in as many matches.
