CRETE, Neb. – On Saturday morning, the Southwestern College men's and women's tennis teams faced the Doane University Tigers. The bouts between the two squads ended in two Builder victories, as the women were able to snag a 6-1 triumph, and the men followed suit with a 5-2 win.
In the men's doubles, the Builder pairing of Ryan Kitchin and Benjamin Erdmann triumphed by a final score of 7-5. Then, the second doubles pairing of Albert Modol and Pablo Rodriguez were defeated by a score of 6-4. Furthermore, Federico Poi and Logan Engela were able to vanquish their opponents by a final of 6-2. The doubles points for the men's went to Southwestern College, with the 2-1 match advantage.
Going into singles, Southwestern's men's No. 1 player, Poi, suffered a defeat in a quick 6-1, 6-2 match. Kitchin's bout as the No. 2 player was able to snatch the win for the Builders in a 6-3, 6-0 tally. His teammate Rodriguez also beat his matchup with a final score of 6-2, 6-3. Erdman, who was lined up as No. 4 for the Builders was defeated in a tie-breaker match after a final score of 6-4, 3-6. In the end, the Builders were able to take home two more wins after Modol and Engela rounded things out with their 7-5, 2-6 and 6-1, 6-2 wins.
The women's doubles ended with a similar result. The pairing of Catherine Coe and Mariana Ochoa were defeated by a tally of 6-4. Fortunately, Jasmin Hauska and Grace Roberts came through and won their match by a score of 6-3 to even the score. In the last doubles match, it was Emily Feihle and Ella Hartnett who beat their opponents to take the doubles point home for the Moundbuilders.
The Builder women's squad started into the singles matchup with a defeat to Southwestern's No. 1, Coe. She lost in a close game in the tiebreaker match by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. Fortunately, things changed, and the Builders ended up wining all the other games. Hauska beat her opponent by a score of 7-5, 6-4, and Ochoa and Roberts showed a powerful performance in both their single matches with a 6-2, 6-1 and 7-5, 7-5 win. To top things off, Hartnett and Feihle rounded things out by finishing their opponents both by a final of 6-1, 6-2.
After a defeat on Friday, the Builders were able to come back and win both their games over Doane University. The Builder men (1-1) and women (1-0) will play again on February 28 when they face an NCAA Division I opponent, Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla.
