WICHITA, Kan. – The Southwestern College men's and women's tennis squads were in action within the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) for the first time in 2023 on Monday afternoon. The road battles went about as perfectly as they could have, as both the Builder men and women won 7-0 against the Falcons, while not dropping a single tilt.
For the women, the doubles competition began with a convincing 6-2 victory by the Builder pairing of Catherine Coe and Mariana Ochoa. Their efforts were one-upped by the outstanding 6-1 win of Jasmin Hauska and Grace Roberts. Then, Ella Hartnett and Emily Feihle earned a 6-4 win in the third doubles tilt to eanr the doubles point for SC.
In men's doubles, Ryan Kitchin and Pablo Rodriguez teamed up to defeat their foes by a final tally of 6-2. The second doubles match was won by Benjamin Erdmann and Logan Engela, who snagged a convincing 6-1 victory. The third Builder doubles pair earned a victory by forfeit, as Federico Poi and Albert Modol did not have opponents on Monday.
The women's singles competition was almost as one-sided as possible, as Moundbuilder players won all but one game for the entire day. Coe earned a 6-0, 6-0 sweep, while Hauska, Ochoa and Hartnett also swept their opponents. A single game in the first set against Roberts went to Friends, but Roberts still earned a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. Feihle did not have an opponent for singles, and earned a win by forfeit.
Things were a bit more competitive on the men's side, but Southwestern still never lost a set to the Falcons. Poi nabbed a 6-3, 6-0 victory in the top singles match, while Kitchin added a 6-1, 6-0 triumph and Rodriguez was a 6-1, 6-1 victor. Modol's 6-0, 6-2 win and Erdmann's 6-1, 6-0 victory rounded out the five singles wins in matches that were played out in full. Engela became a winner by forfeit in the sixth singles match.
The next action for these two Builder squads comes on Saturday, March 25 at the T.H. Vaughan Tennis Complex in Winfield, where SC will take on the Swedes of Bethany College with their sights set on their second conference wins of the 2023 campaign.
