Lauren Kelly: Leaving An Impact Beyond The Scorecard

WINFIELD, Kan. — Lauren Kelly, a senior on the women's golf team, has spent four years at Southwestern perfecting her craft, but her career is defined by her growth, friendships, and unforgettable memories.

Kelly's passion for the sport began in Amarillo, Texas, where her father introduced her to golf at a young age. It became a family bond and soon turned into something more.

"My parents have definitely been my biggest influence," she said. "They've supported me through every high and low, always reminding me to enjoy the process."

Kelly attended Amarillo High School before making the trip north to Winfield, where she discovered that being a student-athlete comes with much more than just playing a sport.

"Competing here has given me lifelong friendships, taught me discipline, and pushed me to grow in ways I didn't expect. Representing this school and being part of the women's golf program has been such a big part of who I am now," Kelly said.

Like many athletes on campus, Kelly's time at Southwestern has flashed before her eyes. She often reminisces on her time at SC.

"It's honestly a little surreal looking back." She said. "It's been such a special experience."

Kelly's journey has been defined by moments that go beyond the course, but one match stands out above the rest. She vividly recalls the KCAC fall match play championship last year, against Kansas Wesleyan University. With Southwestern tied in the final, Kelly stood 2 up with three holes to play. After a miraculous up-and-down that clinched the hole, she turned to see her teammates — and seniors before her — cheering with tears in their eyes.

"It was a special moment for me," Kelly said. "It was also the first time in match play history that a team other than [Kansas Wesleyan University] won."

Southwestern led the tournament with 10 birdies and was second in pars with 72.

Over the years, Kelly has grown from a freshman focused solely on scores to a senior leader who understands the mental and emotional side of competition. The lessons she's learned playing golf have translated to her everyday life.

"I've become more patient, resilient, and confident — not just on the course but in life," she said. "I've learned how to handle pressure, lead by example, and trust myself."

For Kelly, consistency and leadership is what she is most proud of. She's been a steady presence for her team — posting solid rounds, setting the tone during tough stretches, and being someone her teammates could rely on.

"Mental toughness and support go a long way," she said. "That's what I've always tried to bring."

Kelly hopes to leave a lasting impact on the women's golf program. She hopes future golfers at Southwestern understand what she now does.

"Enjoy every second of it — even the early mornings and tough practices," Kelly said. "It goes by so fast. Don't forget to take pride in representing your school, but also take care of yourself mentally and physically. Balance is key, and your teammates will become your family."

Upon graduation, Kelly plans to pursue a master's degree in business at Southwestern and hopes to stay connected to the program as a graduate assistant.

"Golf has become very special to me, and I want to continue to enjoy and pursue it," she said. "Whether it's coaching or working in the business side of the sport, I know golf will always be a part of my life."

The Moundbuilders have one last chance this season at the KCAC Match Play Tournament, held at Mariah Hills Golf Course in Dodge City, Kansas. Kelly will look to finish the season on a strong note after a runner-up finish at the Southwestern Fall Invite (78-80—158) and a 3rd place finish at the Evangel Fall Invitational (81-85—166) this season.

For Kelly, the legacy she leaves behind isn't just measured in wins and low rounds — it's in the relationships built, the example set, and the love for the game that will carry on long after her final round in purple and white.
