SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. — Southwestern volleyball begins its 2025 season Friday with a neutral-site doubleheader in Arkansas, facing Paul Quinn College at 12 p.m. and Philander Smith University at 2 p.m.
The Moundbuilders aim to set a new tone after finishing 5-15 overall and 2-11 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play last season. Southwestern averaged 10.2 kills per set in 2024 while pressuring opponents from the service line with nearly two aces per set. Defensively, the Builders proved steady with 15.3 digs per frame, numbers they hope to carry into the new season.
Several returning players are expected to anchor the lineup. Defensive specialist Kalissa Ortega returns after competing in every match last year, contributing reliable serve-receive and back-row defense. Senior setter and defensive specialist Riley Valley adds versatility in multiple rotations. Setter Natalie Blaufuss, who tallied 131 assists and 26 service aces in 2024, brings stability and a strong serving presence. Senior Reece Likes is back after notching 65 assists and 17 aces, giving Southwestern depth at the setter position. Libero Avery Riedel anchors the defense after leading the team with 307 digs and averaging nearly four per set.
A group of newcomers will also be leaned on early, expected to bring size at the net and fresh depth in the backcourt. Their presence should help boost blocking production and improve serve-receive consistency, both areas the Builders are looking to elevate from last year.
Friday's doubleheader provides the first chance to see Southwestern's blend of experience and new talent in action. With two matches in quick succession, the trip to Siloam Springs will offer an early measure of the Builders' depth and chemistry.
