WINFIELD, Kan. – Southwestern will look to snap a five-match skid Saturday morning when it faces Briar Cliff and Waldorf in a neutral-site doubleheader. The Moundbuilders (1-6) open the day at 9 a.m. against Briar Cliff before meeting Waldorf at 11 a.m.
Southwestern's lone victory this season came in a straight-set sweep of Philander Smith on Aug. 22, but since then the Builders have dropped six of their last seven, including four matches that went at least four sets.
Mikki Johnson leads Southwestern with 75 kills, averaging 2.78 per set, while outside hitter Autumn Bennett adds 48 kills at a .235 hitting percentage. Setter Reece Likes paces the Builders' offense with 116 assists, averaging 4.30 per set, while libero Avery Riedel anchors the back row with a team-high 89 digs.
Briar Cliff (3-3) enters the weekend after splitting two matches with William Penn, most recently falling in five sets on Aug. 29. The Chargers are led offensively by Tamika Eastman, who has 58 kills and a .201 hitting percentage, while setter Kylie Hart has tallied 111 assists (4.63 per set). Briar Cliff averages 10.8 kills per set as a team and is hitting .181 on the season.
Waldorf (11-14 a year ago, 5-11 in conference play) returns experience across the lineup. Kenzie Kidd led the Warriors last season with 264 kills, averaging 2.97 per set, while Kaylin Koch added 211 digs and 25 service aces. Waldorf posted a .123 team hitting percentage last fall but will look to build off a strong neutral-site record of 4-1.
Southwestern has shown resilience in long matches this season, pushing John Brown and Graceland to five sets in narrow losses. The Moundbuilders will aim to turn those close contests into wins against two non-conference foes before opening KCAC play.
First serve is set for 9 a.m. Saturday against Briar Cliff, followed by an 11 a.m. matchup with Waldorf.
