Southwestern Climbs to No. 17 After Odom, Builders Roll Past Ottawa

WINFIELD, Kan. – Southwestern College football climbed to No. 17 in the country in the latest Netting Professionals NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, released Monday, following a dominant 61-10 road victory over Ottawa University.

Quarterback Jaime Odom, who was named KCAC Offensive Player of the Week, fueled the Moundbuilders' rise. The senior has thrown for 1,143 yards and 12 touchdowns through four games, completing 62.4% of his passes. Against Ottawa, he accounted for multiple scores and continued to prove why he's among the league's most dynamic playmakers. Odom also leads the team in rushing with 183 yards and five touchdowns.

Offensive Firepower

Southwestern (3-1) has been electric on offense, averaging 546.3 yards and 43.8 points per game. The Builders' passing attack ranks among the best in the NAIA, with 344.3 yards per game through the air.

Receiver Matthew Holthusen has been Odom's favorite target, hauling in 22 catches for 494 yards and five touchdowns, averaging more than 123 yards per game. Joe Smyth has also provided a spark with 256 receiving yards and three scores, while Hunter Reaves and Aidan Koenig have combined for over 230 yards and four touchdowns.

On the ground, the Moundbuilders feature a deep rotation. Christian Steward leads with 135 rushing yards, while Joshua Mazyck (99 yards, one TD) and Chris Collier-Surly (90 yards, one TD) add balance.

Defensive Standouts

Defensively, Southwestern has held opponents to just 293.8 yards per game, forcing six interceptions. Linebacker Corbin Williams leads the unit with 22 tackles and an interception, while Carl Malvo has posted 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. The defense has also limited opponents to only four rushing touchdowns.

Special Teams Impact

Kicker Preston Fansher has been perfect, hitting both of his field goal attempts—including a 41-yarder—and converting 17 extra points. Smyth and Christian Steward have also boosted the return game, with Steward averaging 30 yards per kick return.

Next Up

Southwestern has won three of its first four contests, with victories over Bethel, Tabor, and Ottawa. The lone setback came against Evangel. The Moundbuilders, now one of the NAIA's top-20 programs, will look to keep momentum rolling as they host Bethany College at 6pm inside Richard L. Jantz Stadium, Saturday, Sept. 27.
