WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College returns to Richard L. Jantz Stadium on Wednesday for a Conference women's soccer matchup against the University of Saint Mary. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Both teams carry identical 1-0-1 records in conference play. Southwestern (1-3-1 overall) is coming off its first victory of the season, a 1-0 win over York, while Saint Mary (3-2-2) is unbeaten in its last three matches, including a 1-1 draw against Tabor.
Southwestern has leaned on defense through the opening month. Goalkeeper Hayden Clark has recorded 48 saves with a .889 save percentage and two shutout. Junior Millie Hazzard leads the Moundbuilders with two goals, while senior Natalie Belanger has added one. The team has scored three goals in five matches but has allowed only six.
Saint Mary brings more offensive firepower, averaging 13.6 shots per game with 11 goals in seven contests. Kate Erpelding leads the Spires with three goals, and Rebecca Lord has added two goals and two assists. Nieves Vazquez has scored twice while maintaining a .857 shots-on-goal percentage. Goalkeeper Avah Casarez has a 0.89 goals-against average with one shutout.
Southwestern holds a 14-6-2 advantage in the all-time series dating back to 2005, but Saint Mary has won the last two meetings, including a 3-1 victory in Winfield last October.
Key factors Wednesday include Clark's performance against Saint Mary's attack, the impact of set pieces, the Spires own a 36-10 edge in corner kicks this season, and the importance of the first goal. All three of Southwestern's scores this season have come in matches the team has either won or tied.
