WINFIELD, Kan.  — The Southwestern College Moundbuilders open Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play Thursday night when they host the Avila University Eagles at 6 p.m.

Southwestern enters the conference opener with a 2-5 record, looking to bounce back from a 13-9 home loss to Hesston. The Moundbuilders have shown offensive production through the first seven games of the season, led by Sam Benz and Raisean Dorsey at the plate.

Benz paces the team with 13 hits, while Dorsey is close behind with 12. Dorsey has provided power early in the season, hitting two home runs and four doubles, and driving in seven runs. His production has helped anchor a Southwestern lineup that has continued to generate scoring opportunities despite its early-season record.

Gabe Rodriguez has added seven hits for the Moundbuilders, while Cole Van Stone has six, contributing to a lineup that will look to carry momentum into conference play.

Avila enters Thursday's matchup at 3-1, with all three wins coming against Nelson University (Texas) to open its season. The Eagles will be playing their first KCAC game of the year.

Thursday's contest marks the start of conference play for both teams as Southwestern looks to defend its home field and gain early footing in the KCAC standings.
