WINFIELD, Kan. — Avila piled up 34 hits over two games and swept Southwestern in a KCAC-opening doubleheader Tuesday, winning 15-1 in five innings before completing the sweep with an 8-0 victory in Game 2.
Game 1
Southwestern (4-6, 0-2 KCAC) dropped the opener 15-1 as Avila used a six-run third inning to pull away.
The Eagles scored three runs in the first and two more in the second before breaking the game open in the third. Avila added four runs in the fifth to finish with 15 runs on 19 hits.
Taylor Mesna led the Moundbuilders at the plate, going 2-for-2. Jolie Boyd and Tiara Henry added one hit apiece, and Mackenzie Reinert scored Southwestern's lone run in the second inning.
Game 2
In the nightcap, Avila struck early again and defeated Southwestern 8-0 in seven innings.
The Eagles scored four runs in the first inning and added insurance runs in the fifth and seventh to secure the sweep. Avila finished with 12 hits in Game 2.
Southwestern was held to four hits, including a triple by Ellie Kucera. Boyd, Fayth Howard and Aubrey Allison each recorded a single.
Southwestern returns to action next Wednesday with a road trip to face Mission University in Springfield, Missouri.
