WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College softball dropped both games of a nonconference doubleheader to Mission (Mo.) on Thursday evening, falling 2-1 in Game 1 and 5-3 in Game 2.
The Moundbuilders kept the opener close but could not overcome a pair of solo home runs by the Patriots.
Mission struck first in the second inning on a solo home run from Haley Frillman to take a 1-0 lead. Southwestern answered in the third inning as Tiara Henry singled to start the rally and Mackenzie Reinert followed with a base hit to put two runners aboard. Taylor Mesna then drove in Henry with an RBI single to right field to tie the game at 1-1.
Mission regained the lead later in the inning when Apryl Zeno connected on a solo home run, putting the Patriots ahead 2-1.
The Moundbuilders collected five hits in the contest, including singles from Henry, Reinert, Mesna, Aubrey Allison, and Jolie Boyd, but were unable to push across the tying run late.
Faith Campbell started in the circle for Southwestern and allowed two runs on 10 hits over five innings. Paige Begay worked an inning of scoreless relief.
In Game 2, Southwestern again battled throughout the contest but Mission used timely hitting to secure the 5-3 victory and complete the doubleheader sweep.
The Moundbuilders jumped out to an early lead before the Patriots responded with runs in the middle innings to take control of the game. Southwestern threatened late but could not complete the comeback.
Southwestern returns to action Saturday, March 14, hosting York University (Neb.) in a doubleheader at the Broadway Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with Game 2 set to begin at approximately 3 p.m.
