Southwestern Drops Doubleheader at Mission

WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern dropped both games of a nonconference doubleheader to Mission University on Monday, falling 4-0 in the opener before a 9-1 loss in five innings in game two.

The Moundbuilders were held to four hits in game one and were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities, leaving seven runners on base. Tiara Henry, Taylor Mesna, Ellie Kucera and Mackenzie Reinert each recorded a hit, with Reinert adding a stolen base.

Southwestern's pitching staff kept the game within reach early, but Mission pushed across a run in the first inning and added two more in the second to take control. Faith Campbell got the start in the circle, while Jaidyn Soldin provided steady relief as the Moundbuilders limited further damage until a late insurance run in the sixth.

In game two, Southwestern again collected four hits, highlighted by a 2-for-3 performance from Henry. Kucera drove in the Moundbuilders' lone run in the fourth inning, trimming the deficit after Mission built an early lead.

Mission plated two runs in the first inning and broke the game open with a five-run fourth, putting Southwestern in a difficult position the rest of the way. Paige Begay started in the circle, with Emma Willesden working in relief.

Despite the results, the Moundbuilders showed flashes offensively throughout the day and will look to build on those efforts moving forward.

Southwestern returns to action Tuesday as it hosts Ottawa in a conference matchup at Broadway Sports Complex.
