WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern dropped both ends of a KCAC doubleheader against Saint Mary on Tuesday, falling 10-2 in six innings in Game 1 before a late run lifted the Spires to a 5-4 win in Game 2.

In the opener, Southwestern struck first with two runs in the top of the first, but Saint Mary responded with a four-run fifth inning and broke the game open with six runs in the sixth to secure the run-rule victory.

Tiara Henry and Ellie Kucera each collected hits and drove in a run for the Moundbuilders, while Taylor Mesna added a double and scored. Southwestern managed four hits but was held scoreless after the opening frame.

The Spires totaled 11 hits and were led by Kylie Vandervoort, who tripled and drove in three runs, and Grace Rose, who finished with two hits and three RBIs.

Game 2 proved much tighter, with Southwestern taking an early lead and later rallying in the fifth inning. The Moundbuilders scored once in the first and plated three runs in the fifth to go in front 4-3.

Fayth Howard delivered a key RBI double, while Tiara Henry and Jolie Boyd each added RBIs in the contest.

Saint Mary answered late, tying the game in the sixth before walking it off with a run in the seventh to complete the sweep.

Faith Campbell went the distance in the circle for Southwestern in Game 2, striking out two while allowing five runs on six hits.

Southwestern falls to 6-26 overall and 2-16 in KCAC play following the losses, while Saint Mary improves to 15-21 overall and 8-10 in conference play.
