WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern picked up a pair of wins Thursday, sweeping a nonconference doubleheader from Kansas Christian at the Broadway Sports Complex.
The Moundbuilders opened the day with a 12-9 victory in a high-scoring Game 1 before completing the sweep with a win in the nightcap.
In the opener, Southwestern used a pair of big innings to overcome an early deficit.
Kansas Christian struck first with three runs across the second and third innings, but the Moundbuilders answered in the fourth. Southwestern plated three runs in the inning to take its first lead of the game.
The Builders broke things open in the fifth, scoring five runs to extend the advantage to 9-3. Southwestern added three more runs in the sixth to provide key insurance.
Kansas Christian rallied with four runs in the seventh and finished with 21 hits, but Southwestern held on for the 12-9 win.
Jolie Boyd led the Moundbuilders with two hits and two runs scored, while Ellie Kucera added two hits and an RBI as Southwestern totaled 16 hits.
Emma Willesden went the distance in the circle to earn the win.
In Game 2, Southwestern carried its offensive momentum into the nightcap, again putting together timely hitting to secure the sweep.
The Moundbuilders found production throughout the lineup and were able to control the game late, holding off Kansas Christian to complete the two-game sweep.
Southwestern returns to action Saturday, April 11, hosting Tabor College in a KCAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with Game 2 set for 3 p.m. at the Broadway Sports Complex.
