JOPLIN, Mo. — The Southwestern College men's and women's golf teams opened play at the Evangel Fall Invitational on Monday, competing against a strong field at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club. The two-day event, which wraps up Tuesday, saw the Moundbuilders post solid scores across the board as they aim to climb the leaderboard in the final round.
The Southwestern men's squad battled through two rounds on the par-72 Twin Hills layout, finishing the day with team scores of 309 and 313 for a two-round total of 622.
Sophomore Cameron Surles led the Builders with consistent rounds of 74 and 76, pacing the team's effort across 36 holes. Jordan Clancy followed closely with rounds of 78 and 75, while Mitchell Lehman opened with a 78 before carding an 82 in round two. Christian Campbell posted scores of 79 and 81, and Drew Demeyer rounded out the lineup with an 86 and 81.
With one round remaining, Southwestern will look to build on its performance and make a push up the team standings on Tuesday.
On the women's side, Lauren Kelly and Jodi Keener represented the Moundbuilders as individual competitors in Monday's opening round. Kelly turned in one of the top rounds of the day, firing an 81 to sit in fourth place heading into the final round. Keener carded an 89 and will aim to improve her position on Tuesday.
Both Southwestern squads will return to Twin Hills Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, October 7th, for the final round of the Evangel Fall Invitational, looking to close out the fall tournament on a strong note.
