WICHITA, Kan. — The Southwestern College men's and women's golf teams opened play Monday at the Crestview Fall Classic, hosted by Friends University.
The Moundbuilders men's team battled through 36 holes on the par-72 Crestview course and sit in eighth place after the opening day. Southwestern posted a team score of 310 in the first round before shaving 15 strokes in the afternoon for a 295, finishing the day with a two-round total of 605.
Cameron Surles led the way with rounds of 76 and 73 for a 149, just ahead of teammates Jordan Clancy (81-69—150) and Nico Neuteboom (75-75—150). Christian Campbell turned in a 79-78—157, while Britt Blackshear carded rounds of 80-82—162. Clancy's second-round 69 was the lowest score of the day for Southwestern.
On the women's side, three individuals competed for Southwestern. Lauren Kelly paced the team with an 86, followed by Jodi Keener at 105 and Lillian Goodwin with a 122.
Play will continue Tuesday at Crestview Country Club, where both teams will look to climb the leaderboard on the final day of the tournament. With temperatures reaching 87 degrees in Wichita on Monday, both squads battled the heat as much as the course. Forecasts call for another hot round Tuesday with a high of 86, meaning the Moundbuilders will need to show the same resilience in pursuit of a strong finish.
